The company was officially founded in 1967 when two German engineers from Mercedes' motorsport division – Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher – decided to venture on their own following the decision of the Star's House to withdraw from official racing commitments.

The chosen name for the new company – born with the goal of preparing and racing Mercedes cars – is nothing more than an acronym composed of the initials of the founders' surnames plus the G from Großaspach, a town in Baden-Württemberg, the birthplace of Aufrecht.

More than 100,000 high-performance vehicles leave the Affalterbach plant every year. And even though the company has grown significantly since its inception, it remains true to its core values: innovative engineering, high quality, and craftsmanship precision.
