21 thousand charging stations by 2025: the MASE project

The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Safety (MASE) announces that two decrees have been registered by the Court of Auditors, allowing the installation of over 21,000 electric vehicle charging stations within the next three years.

The Ministry regulates the access modalities through tenders to the funds, 713 million euros from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) to install at least 7,500 super-fast charging infrastructures on extra-urban roads, excluding highways, and 13,755 fast charging infrastructures in cities by the end of 2025.

In the first year, contracts for the construction of 2,500 charging stations are planned on the highways, in addition to 4,000 charging stations in urban areas of the peninsula. By 2025, the goal is to install 21,555 charging points. The PNRR investment would cover 40% of the costs of the stations, aimed at occupying more areas evenly, ensuring a minimum of infrastructure per area. The charging stations on highways will be super-fast (175kW) to ensure quick charging for long-distance routes, prioritizing installation at existing service stations.

The decree for charging stations in urban centers (at least 90kW), on the other hand, will see a more widespread intervention depending on the values taken from city to city, such as the incidence of electric cars in the location, air quality, and the tourist vocation of the municipalities.

The electric charging network is expanding more and more in response to citizens' need to be reassured about the choice of electric vehicles, providing answers in a market that was experiencing a downturn, and showing evolution in 2023.
